Americans and Their Presidents

Items are designed to have horizontal, or landscape-oriented featured images, that are wider than they are tall. In some cases, square images can look okay, too.
However, we do not recommend uploading vertical, or portrait-oriented, images. Notice how you had to scroll down here past that long image before you could read this helpful tip?
Summary: Items look better with landscape images, ideally at a standard ratio, like 4:3.
How have Americans understood what it means to be President of the United States?
This seminar uses that question as a point of departure for a multidisciplinary cultural approach to the presidency in the United States, examining the shifting roles of the chief executive from George Washington through Barack Obama.
In addition to a consideration of the President’s political and policymaking roles, this course examines how the lived experiences of presidents have informed the ways Americans have conceived of public and private life within a broader political culture.
In the process, this course uses the presidency as a means to explore topics ranging from electioneering to gender, foreign policy to popular media. Readings are drawn from a broad range of fields.
